I am an artist working and living in Brooklyn and East Hampton, NY.
My painting process is deeply rooted in observation: the perception and poetic presence of life’s details. I work the brush to connect a landscape with intimacy and intense emotions of gratitude and joy. I seek to convey moments of strong sensation through bold compositions and crisp colors, inviting the viewer to step into my paintings.
Deeply personal and full of light, my paintings often represent the expansive shores near my home in eastern Long Island, the intimacy of a remote New England cabin, the unique footprint left on the sand by the tides in coastal Maine, or the vibrancy of New York cityscapes.
I mainly use oils - the plasticity of the medium seduces me, and I cannot resist. I am also intrigued by the spontaneity and fluidity of transparent watercolors, the movement of the pigment-loaded water. The challenge of working in these two mediums reflects the constant struggle to gain control of the physical world. .
I began my university education at The Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain, where I earned a BS in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Urban Planning, and had a successful career that saw me moving several times between Europe and the United States. I began painting as a way of slowing things down, of making a more profound connection to the natural world.
The dramatic paintings at The Prado Museum in my hometown of Madrid and the classic Italian masters contemplated during my many years living in Italy continue to inform my aesthetic approach. But it was after seeing the Andrew Wyeth exhibition “Looking Out, Looking In,” at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. and the artist’s tranquil yet mysterious seascapes of the Maine coast when I found in painting a real sense of purpose.
My paintings have been shown in several exhibitions in New York, including at The National Arts Club, The Art Students League, and The National Academy of Design of New York.
